I am an occupational therapist in Bloemfontein who mainly does hospital based work. I graduated from the University of the Free State and completed my community service year ("comm. serve") at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria. A large part of my undergraduate and "comm.serve" training was in the area of psychiatry. Areas that I have gained experience in post comm.serve include frail care, palliative care, neurology, ICU work, orthopaedics, discharge planning, and paediatrics.
How are occupational therapy services delivered? The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) offers a simple process to follow (https://wfot.org/about/about-occupational-therapy):
Referral: From a healthcare professional.
Assessment: e.g. standardised assessments, interviews, observations, past medical history, collateral information, etc.
Planning: Short and long term plans for intervention. Assessment (previous step) is often ongoing and helps with planning.
Intervention: Client specific intervention based on plans and ongoing evaluation
Cooperation: With the client and support network
